We welcome volunteers in our schools!
Once your volunteer application and background check have been approved, your next step will be exploring the various ways you can get involved in our schools. There are numerous opportunities for community members and student families to contribute, from joining the school PTA to collaborating with local community organizations. Whether you’re volunteering in classrooms, assisting with events, or supporting after-school programs, your involvement will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students. Some of the ways to volunteer include:
SMART
Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) is a statewide reading support program that pairs volunteers with students on a weekly basis at their schools. One-on-one reading volunteers and site coordinators needed. Help inspire a love of reading and learning! Visit www.SMARTReading.org or call 503.391.8423 to learn more.
McMinnville Education Foundation (MEF)
MEF funds programs for district schools (including Battle of the Books, Artist-in-Residence and Science Experiences) primarily with a fun run in the fall (Runtoberfest). Find out more and contact MEF here.
Science Experiences
All district elementary schools have off-campus learning opportunities organized by grade. The field trips are mostly at Miller Woods, the Evergreen Space Museum or Metzer Park. Volunteers lead a learning station, which involves explaining the activity, passing out materials and helping with things like planting seedlings, scooping pond water, etc. (Training provided onsite!) Contact Jinsun Lee, 503.565.4004, with questions and to sign up.
Family Resource Center
The MSD Family Resource Center serves district families in a variety of ways. Volunteers help with stocking the food pantry after a donation and/or helping sort and shelve clothing donations. Call 503.565.4225 for more information.
PTA
All MSD schools have a parent-teacher association and anyone interested in supporting children’s education is welcome to join. PTAs focus on fundraising to provide additional activities, services and equipment for students and teachers. Fundraisers such as jog-a-thons, spring carnivals, etc. need volunteers to organize and manage the events. Contact a school for information about their PTA.
School-based Activities
Schools often need help in the classrooms or teacher support like copying, stuffing folders, creating bulletin boards, etc. Contact a school directly for school specific needs.
